Robert Fernandez reveals that Barcelona wanted to keep Bravo

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

FC Barcelona technical secretary Robert Fernandez has revealed that Barca wanted to keep Claudio Bravo at the Camp Nou. He said, “He had an offer and although we fought for him to stay. But Claudio wanted to leave, so we had to negotiate. He is a player who had two years of his contract left. Nobody told Bravo he’d be second choice. We wanted to renew his contract, but he had other projects in mind. Barcelona signed Cillessen as a response to that, and because Luis Enrique wanted three keepers, a squad choice that for him comes down to personal preference.”

Claudio Bravo is said to have been unhappy about his squad position. That is why first-team football attracted him more and he switched the Nou Camp for the Etihad. Barcelona boosted their goalkeeping options with the signing of Netherlands international Cillessen. But Fernandez said the club sees Ter Stegen as their long-term first choice.

He said in a press conference, “Barca always have to sign good players. And the goal is a special place and you have to have important goalkeepers. Marc is a goalkeeper at a young age and it is logical for him to continue for many years. He is a goalkeeper in an extraordinary condition and he is happy.”

But it will be a great signing for City. They have found the goalie that Pep needs in his tactical setup, ball-playing and reliable. The very thing he had during his time at FC Barcelona. But his signing has forced club icon Joe Hart out. But Claudio Bravo will give Guardiola the freedom he needs to bring Manchester City to the pinnacle of English football.
