Ronaldo sculptor defends work, says 'Even Jesus did not please everyone'
A bust of Cristiano Ronaldo received the roast treatment on Wednesday, but the man behind the sculpture stands by his work. "Even Jesus did not please everyone," artist Emanuel Santos said in an interview with Globo Esporte, via Goal.com.
"This is a matter of taste, it’s not as simple as it seems," he said.
Furthermore, despite the avalanche of derision, Santos says that Ronaldo approved of the bust.
“Cristiano saw the photos that his brother sent him. I was with the brother at Cristiano’s museum in Madeira and from the messages he sent, I could tell that he liked what he saw."
Still, the disparity in Ronaldo's actual appearance and what Santos came up with can't be ignored. Ronaldo hasn't directly addressed the statue (or the backlash) directly, but odds are something will have to change. Consider this: According to Santos, Ronaldo asked for a few wrinkles that made him look older be smoothed out before the bust was initially unveiled.
If Ronaldo was afraid of looking old due to wrinkles, what's going through his mind now? Yes, Santos is right, it's impossible to please everyone. But if the subject of the artwork in question winds up displeased, it probably means it's time to give it another try.
