GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) Schalke attacking midfielder Max Meyer will become the latest player to leave the club on a free transfer after failing to reach agreement on a contract extension.
Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel says ''we're dealing with the situation very professionally. There were no bad words between either party.''
Schalke had long been trying to sign the 22-year-old Meyer to a longer deal, but he follows Leon Goretzka - who is going to Bayern Munich - Sead Kolasinac and Joel Matip in leaving without any financial recompense to the club.
Meyer joined Schalke as a youth in 2009 and made steady progress. He scored 22 goals and set up 24 more in 192 competitive games.
