Spain hit EIGHT past Liechtenstein as Italy see off Israel

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Spain trounced Liechtenstein in their opening World Cup 2018 qualifier, as they beat them 8-0, getting new manager Julen Lopetegui’s reign off to a perfect start.

Diego Costa, David Silva and Alvaro Morata all struck twice for the hosts, while Sergi Roberto and Vitolo also netted for the 2010 World Cup winners. Seven of the goals came in the second-half as minnows Liechtenstein failed to cope with Spain’s attacking prowess. It marked the perfect start to Julen Lopetegui’s reign, who saw his side play some ruthlessly devastating football, especially in the second half.

Diego Costa gave Spain the lead in the 10th minute, heading home from six yards. Spain were left frustrated for the rest of the half, as Liechtenstein defended heroically. But Spain upped the anti in the second half, and they got their reward when Sergi Roberto poked home from Nolito’s pass after 54 minutes.

That goal helped open the floodgates, as Liechtenstein began to crumble. Silva, Vitolo, and Costa all scored within the next ten minutes. Morata then scored a quick brace, before David Silva sealed the victory for Spain in injury time.

Italy edge past Israel

10-man Italy beat Israel 3-1 in Haifa, and extended their unbeaten run in World Cup Qualifiers to 28 matches. The win was not so straightforward though, as Israel came close to an equalizer, but were denied by Gianluigi Buffon.

Italy looked to be cruising to victory, after Graziano Pelle and Antonio Candreva gave them a 2-0 lead.

Tal Ben Haim pulled one back for the hosts with a delightful chip. And Israel were given a huge boost when Giorgio Chiellini was sent off in the second half.

But Italy held on, and forward Ciro Immobile in the 83rd minute, to put the game without doubt. The Azzurri now take on Spain next month, in the crunch match of the group.
