Steven Gerrard departs LA Galaxy after 18 months in MLS
A day after seeing Frank Lampard announce his departure from NYCFC, fellow English great Steven Gerrard followed suit.
Gerrard will not be returning to the LA Galaxy following the expiration of his contract, the club announced on Tuesday. Gerrard, like Lampard, is not retiring with the announcement, though his next destination is unknown. Reports have linked him to Celtic and a reunion with his former manager at Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers. Gerrard failed to win a trophy with the Galaxy in his 18 months in MLS, scoring five goals and adding 14 assists in 34 games.
“When I left Liverpool, I came to Los Angeles with the goal of helping the Galaxy lift another MLS Cup,” Gerrard said in a team statement. “I am of course disappointed to have not achieved that objective, but I can look back at my time at the club with pride at what we accomplished, including two straight playoff appearances and countless memorable moments on the pitch. As someone who spent the whole of their career in Liverpool, it has been an incredible experience to come to Los Angeles and play for the LA Galaxy."
Gerrard's departure opens up a Designated Player slot for the Galaxy, who currently have Robbie Keane and Giovani Dos Santos occupying the other two DP places on the roster. Gerrard was the fourth-highest paid player in MLS in terms of guaranteed compensation, according to the most recent numbers released by the MLS Players Union, making $6,132,500 and trailing only Kaka, Sebastian Giovinco and Michael Bradley in that category.
