Stray ball hits fan, leads to life-saving discovery
Sometimes the ball just bounces your way in life. For one Brondby fan, that was more than a figure of speech.
Before a match between Brondby and FC Copenhagen in the Danish Superliga, a fan named David Nielsen was doing what fans do before a game -- just hanging out and watching players warm-up. But when a stray ball hit him in the face, it led to a life-saving diagnosis.
After striker Kamil Wilczek accidentally pelted Nielsen in the stands at the match in August, the fan had a seizure, according to Sport2, and medical staff at the stadium took the fan to the hospital to make sure he didn’t have a concussion. Instead, scans found something much more serious: Nielsen had an undetected brain tumor that needed to be removed.
The fan underwent a quick surgery and, according to Danish outlet Ekstrabladet, he has "good chance of making a strong recovery” after the tumor was successfully removed.
Nielsen expressed his gratitude for Wilczek’s wayward shot, telling reporters that "without him, I would not be here today.”
