Stunning video shows Chapecoense crash survivor Alan Ruschel leave hospital and go home

Three weeks ago, Chapecoense defender Alan Ruschel was in the plane that crashed into mountains outside Medellin, Colombia and killed 71 people. Today, he left the hospital and, under his own power, climbed into an SUV and went home.

Ruschel was one of six people to survive the crash, when the charter plane carrying Chapecoense to the Copa Sudamericana final in Colombia ran out of fuel. After making sufficient progress, he was discharged from the hospital on Friday in a stunning, emotional moment:

Though he is brought out in a wheelchair, he gets out of the chair and walks under his own power to teammate Hyoran, who was not on the plane, and the two share an emotional hug. Then, he climbs into the SUV that will take him away.

Ruschel, 27, had successful surgery on his spine after he was rescued from the wreckage, which has not prevented him from moving.

Fellow defender Helio Hermito Zampier Neto may be able to play soccer again, according to doctors, but he reportedly is still recovering and, as of earlier this week, has not yet been told about what happened to his teammates in the crash. Another player, 24-year-old goalkeeper Jakson Ragnar Follmann, had his right leg amputated and has had surgery on his left leg.
