The Bundesliga Resumes with Bayern Munich and Schalke 04

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

With the second matches of the Bundesliga finally here after a short international break for 2018 World Cup Qualifying, Bayern Munich will travel to Gelsenkirchen to play Schalke 04 to open up the weekend’s games.

Bayern Munich is going into this second Bundesliga match ranked first in the Bundesliga table, which isn’t tremendously important considering the small sample size of matches.  What is decidedly more significant is their goal differential.  With just one game played, Bayern Munich already has a +6 goal differential because they slaughtered Werder Bremen in the season opener.

This result was a dream for new Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti.  His first league game with the club could not have gone better, nor could Ancelotti have hoped for a more dominating performance.  Especially as Bayern looks to make a deep run in the Champions League, having great league performance is critical.

On the Schalke side, they are coming off a 1-0 defeat in their opening game against Eintracht Frankfurt.  But a hopeful spot for fans is that they could watch new signee Yevhen Konoplyanka for the first time in this match, which many are excited about.  He’s on a season long loan from Sevilla FC and he should add dynamic ability and speed to the pitch for Schalke as they hope to defeat the reigning Bundesliga champions at home.

However, Bayern Munich are unbeaten in the last 11 competitive matches between the teams and their last Bundesliga loss to Schalke was in December of 2010.  Ancelotti has also had a brief and successful campaign against Schalke, so while it will be a somewhat close game (not anything like the 6-0 scoreline of the Werder Bremen game), Bayern Munich will almost certainly win.
