Toronto made a historic comeback to become the MLS Cup's 1st Canadian team
Toronto FC are going to the MLS Cup final. They booked their spot in the match with a 7-5 aggregate win that took extra time as they downed their rivals, the Montreal Impact, to become the first team from Canada to ever make MLS's ultimate game.
But the Reds' win in the Eastern Conference final was much more than simply beating a rival or booking a spot in MLS Cup. It was even more than making Canadian soccer history.
They got there by pulling off a comeback for the ages.
With all the goals in the tie, it's easy to forget that Toronto FC started by falling behind 3-0. It looked like they were done-for in Montreal, conceding three times and looking lifeless in front of 61,000 fans. But they scored two second half goals to make it 3-2 in the second half, where another 3-2 scoreline sent the match to extra time. There, TFC scored twice to win it.
By the time it was all done, Toronto FC had become just the second team in MLS playoff history to come back from a three-goal deficit. The only other team to do it was the San Jose Earthquakes in 2003, who were actually 4-0 down and came back all in one match.
So no, Toronto FC's comeback wasn't the greatest in MLS history, but it was one to behold and it was historic. Finally, a Canadian team is in the MLS Cup final.
