Tottenham linked with strange transfer target

Are Tottenham really chasing a 27-year-old midfielder?

Tottenham fans want their club to be active in the January transfer window. Spurs have a chance at real glory this season, but will need a few key additions to make that happen. I’m not sure that purchasing Milan midfielder Milan Badelj is what anyone had in mind.

Various reports from England claim that Spurs are preparing a January bid for the Croatian International. Badelj was courted by Inter Milan in the summer, but ultimately Fiorentina declined to make a deal with their Serie A rivals.

It would be a pretty strange addition for Mauricio Pochettino. It’s not that Badelj isn’t a quality player, he’s actually a very steady presence for both club and country. My issue is that he doesn’t have a ton of upside.

He’s already 27-years-old which means he’s likely playing the best football of his career. His current level of performance isn’t certain to really move the needle for Spurs. Badelj could certainly add depth to the squad, but he’d be unlikely to break into Pochettino’s starting XI.

It would be much more logical for Tottenham to either a-purchase a young player who could really blossom under Pochettino’s guidance, or b-spend big on a star who would unquestionably be an immediate upgrade for the squad. Buying Badelj certainly wouldn’t satisfy either of those criteria.

Tottenham fans should take these rumors with at least a few grains of salt. It has all the stench of a player agent who wants to drum up interest in their client. It’s not impossible that Spurs might be interested in Milan Badelj, but it isn’t very likely.
