Tottenham right back Kyle Walker is the latest Spur to agree to a new contract

Tottenham transfer chief Daniel Levy gets a lot of stick from the Spurs fan base, but he’s had an excellent season. His latest deal to get Kyle Walker to sign a new deal only makes him look better in the eyes of club faithful.

Walker may not get the attention of a lot of other Spurs stars, but he’s been excellent under Pochettino. Much has been made of Danny Rose’s improvement over the Argentine boss, but Walker has experienced a significant uptick in form as well.

Talent has never been an issue for the England right back. He’s clearly a world-class athlete who could thrive in any number of positions. His challenge previously has been upgrading the mental aspects of his game.

That’s where his game has improved the most under Pochettino. He doesn’t get forward as often as he did under previous managers, but he’s largely eliminated the mental errors that made him a questionable defender. His increased ability to make the ordinary play look well…ordinary, is a testament to his hard work.

From Levy’s perspective, it’s another deal designed to lock down a key player before his head can be turned by another club. If Walker continues to play like he has to begin this season, it’s only a matter of time before Europe’s elite come calling. It’s not out of the question that he could become a target of a club like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

By agreeing to a new deal to keep him at White Hart Lane until 2021, Tottenham take back all the leverage in any future transfer negotiations. Now Spurs are in no danger of feeling like they have to sell Walker just because a big offer comes in.

Levy might elect to cash-in on Walker in the future, but he’ll do so on his terms. Tottenham fans know that means it will take a gigantic financial offer to acquire their star right-back. Look for Kyle Walker to be a key part of Pochettino’s Spurs project for years to come.
