Tottenham: Pochettino Intervenes in Eriksen's Contract Talks

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Tottenham and Christian Eriksen are set to agree on an extension soon.

With an impasse happening on Christian Eriksen’s contract extension, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino decided to step in and ensure a deal would be completed.

This stalemate which had gone on for a month now, is finally getting resolved due to Pochettino’s influence with the club.

After signing a new five-year deal prior to the end of last season, Pochettino received a new title as “manager” rather than “head coach”.

Because of this major change, the Argentine manager got both parties to agree on personal terms. According to The Guardian, Christian Eriksen’s new wages will be set at £70,000-per-week.

This puts the Danish international behind Hugo Lloris (around £80,000) with Érik Lamela and Mousa Dembélé not too far behind Spurs’ captain as the highest earners on the squad.

Eriksen’s new deal will see him stay with the club for four more seasons until 2020 in a new four-year deal, which adds two more years to his current contract.

The reason why Pochettino decided to intervene in negotiations is the simple fact that Christian Eriksen has not looked sharp to start the Premier League season.

One way to have a player lose focus, even though Eriksen had a summer break when Denmark were unable to qualify for the European Championship, is not securing a long-term deal.

In a way, Pochettino stepping in helped the club move past this situation and into something more important — the long season ahead.

Daniel Levy and Martin Schoots, Eriksen’s agent, had to make a compromise.

Levy runs a tight budget, but it’s tricky to balance out the wage book when other players are looking to get paid too.

Schoots understands this, but at the same time Eriksen should be earning double of his current salary (£35,000) after being one of Spurs’ better players the past three seasons.

Players should be paid based on future projections, and Christian Eriksen has shown that he is a consistent player and is vital to this team’s offense.

And while Eriksen’s camp was reportedly “demanding” £150,000 a week — which may have been taken out of context — the underlying message was simple: Christian Eriksen needed to get paid eventually.

With this contract situation sorted out, it should help ease the 24-year-old’s mind so that he could get back into football mode.

Spurs won’t resume football until September 10 so this gives Christian Eriksen enough time to get his bearings back by playing with Denmark during the international break and hopefully finding his form.

Should Eriksen still struggle, Mauricio Pochettino may bench him in favor of Moussa Sissoko (as a right midfielder) while Érik Lamela switches to the left flank.
