Tottenham showing late interest in Moussa Sissoko of Newcastle

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Tottenham are interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko but the Frenchman’s extortionate asking price could be a deal breaker.

Tottenham are interested in making a last-minute dash to sign Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United, according to The Sun. Sissoko has been the subject of transfer speculation all summer but remains a Newcastle player on the penultimate day of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle are reported to want £35 million for the inconsistent Sissoko. At that price, it’s easy to see why the player is still at the club. Sissoko wants to leave St. James’ Park after the club were relegate from the Premier League last season.

Tottenham are desperate to bring in some additional players with a busy season ahead. The club have been linked to Wilfried Zaha in recent days. Isco is another player whose name has floated around.

It looks like everything is going to happen last-minute for Tottenham again this year, which is just how Daniel Levy seems to like it. The Spurs chairman is known for making deals in the final days and hours of the transfer window. Some to great to success, some not so much.

Levy will be playing on the fact that Sissoko wants out of Newcastle, hoping to do a reasonable deal for the French international. But what is Sissoko really worth to Mauricio Pochettino? Sissoko would be just a squad player – much like Zaha would – and the need for the 27-year-old cannot be that great, surely.

On his day,Moussa Sissoko is brilliant. Euro 2016 was a good illustration of that. But when one of his better days is going to be is anybodies guess. The inconsistency outshines his talent in the end. Sissoko would prove to be good cover for Spurs due to his flexibility. Whether it’s in the center of midfield or out on the wing, Sissoko can do a job.

There are tons of players who can just do a job, though. They certainly don’t cost £35 million. With Victor Wanyama having arrived in the summer, and Eric Dier and Moussa Dembele being the starters, central midfield is already pretty busy for Tottenham. Dele Alli sometimes plays deeper, too.

Out wide is probably where Sissoko would hold some value for Pochettino. Nacer Chadli left the club to join West Brom yesterday, while Georges-Kevin Nkoudou is still awaiting to seal his transfer to White Hart Lane. In the end, though, any deal will hinge solely on the Magpies’ staggering asking price.

On Tottenham’s part, the move looks a little desperate at this stage. But it’s not like Levy hasn’t done these type of late deals before.
