United boss frustrated as Rojo forces half-fit Jones recall
Louis van Gaal says he has no choice but to recall a half-fit Phil Jones for Manchester United after Marcos Rojo kept quiet about an injury.
Rojo was linked with a move away from United in the summer after he was fined by Van Gaal for failing to renew his passport ahead of the club's pre-season tour of the United States.
He remained at Old Trafford, however, and made his first Premier League start of the season in Sunday's 3-2 win at Southampton in the absence of Luke Shaw, only to be withdrawn with a hamstring problem in the second half at St Mary's.
Van Gaal was irked that the Argentina defender did not warn United's medical staff of the injury, admitting he has had to recall Jones to the squad for Wednesday night's Capital One Cup tie at Ipswich despite him not being fully fit.
"Marcos Rojo is not ready to play, and Paddy McNair is also injured," Van Gaal said. "It's not so nice that we have three defenders injured, but I can line up 11 players so that is not the problem.
"I thought we were right on time for Rojo because we changed him in the game and he didn't warn us that he was injured. He has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury.
"I have to admit that (Jones returns) because of the injury of three defenders, I shall have him on the bench, but he is not fit, maybe he can play 30 minutes. He is a lucky boy that I don't have other substitutes."
