USMNT players react to Abby Wambach's arrest

Published Apr. 4, 2016 11:06 a.m. ET

United States soccer legend Abby Wambach was arrested in Oregon Sunday morning on suspicion of DUI after running a red light. Wambach was booked into Multnomah County Jail, and later released Sunday morning. Wambach issued an apology on Facebook for what she called a "horrible mistake."

Not many of Wambach's fellow athletes publicly reacted to the news, but two U.S. men's national team players seemed to make light of the situation on Twitter. Alejandro Bedoya, who plays professionally in France and is Colombian-American, referenced Wambach's stance against the use of "foreign" players by U.S. Soccer and tweeted that Wambach's arrest "must've been a foreign American player's fault." Bedoya defended himself when his tweet went viral and drew the ire of many fans.

Jozy Altidore quipped that Wambach should have taken a team van, an apparent reference to Hope Solo's husband driving a U.S. Soccer van when he was arrested for a DUI last year.
