AZ Alkmaar have announced a verbal agreement has been reached with Marco van Basten for the former Holland boss to become their head coach next season, replacing Dick Advocaat.

It was revealed in January that Van Basten had decided not to extend his deal with current club Heerenveen and that he would leave at the end of the campaign, while fellow former Oranje coach Advocaat confirmed last month that he would not be staying at AZ after leading the Alkmaar outfit to the Europa League quarter-finals.

AZ now look to have snapped up the former Ajax coach's services, claiming the move will be finalised in the next few days.

"AZ and Marco van Basten on Thursday reached a verbal agreement on a contract as head coach until the summer of 2016," a club statement read on Friday. "The 49-year-old will succeed Dick Advocaat.

"The final formalities will be completed over the next few days, after which he can be presented."

Three-time European Player of the Year Van Basten, a European Championship winner with Holland in 1998, coached his country from 2004 and 2008 before leading Ajax for a season. He took up the Heerenveen reins in 2012.
