Vertonghen: Dembélé Ready to Help Tottenham in Return

Tottenham’s Mousa Dembélé is ready to play against AS Monaco in the Champions League.

Mousa Dembélé who has finished serving his six-match ban will be in contention to help Tottenham in their Champions League tilt against AS Monaco at Wembley Stadium.

According to Mauricio Pochettino, the Belgian international will be available for selection on Wednesday to take on the league leaders in Ligue 1.

“It’s good Mousa is available and he’s in the squad,” Pochettino said (via Spurs’ official site).

“Mousa was important for us last season, but all the players are always important.”

“We are a team, we have a lot of competition and it’s good the players are all available to give me more options.”

Jan Vertonghen agreed with Pochettino in that there is plenty of depth now in this squad.

While Spurs have looked unspectacular in their first four games, they have managed to remain unbeaten despite losing a key player at midfield such as Mousa Dembélé. The 29-year-old midfielder has been training with the team since being suspended so he should be fit.

He was also able to play the entire second half against Spain in an international friendly defeat.

“Don’t worry about him! They’ll make sure he’s fit. He played 45 minutes with the national team so he’ll be ready,” Vertonghen said (via ESPN FC).

“Mousa is, for me, one of the best midfielders in the league.”

“It’s a shame that he hasn’t been there at the start of the season, but if you see how Victor [Wanyama] did and Eric Dier and even Dele Alli, when he had to drop back into a defensive midfield role, they’ve done brilliantly.”

“It’s a perfect example of the strength of our squad.”

Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama haven’t looked as good they should have thus far, but the fact that Spurs have only conceded two goals in the Premier League shows that this defensive midfield pair are doing something right (along with the entire backline and goalkeepers).

If Wanyama has to come off the pitch, Alli could play alongside Dier. It’s like Jan Vertonghen said, there’s plenty of options for Mauricio Pochettino to choose from.

“We’ve got loads of options and I think we need it for the Champions League.”

“It’s going to be a very tough season and not everybody’s going to play 90 minutes every time. I think everyone will think about the team and everyone’s heading in the right direction.”

Having midfield depth with Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko to offer some rest for Eric Dier and Mousa Dembélé will be a big boost for Spurs.

Seeing Son Heung-Min record a brace against Stoke City, Harry Kane and Dele Alli get on the board and Christian Eriksen returning to form, Spurs’ attack can be quite dangerous. Adding George-Kévin N’Koudou and Érik Lamela as well should make Tottenham’s offense difficult to stop when they’re in-form.

All in all, Tottenham’s depth was bolstered this summer and with more players to choose from, Spurs can compete on all fronts this season.
