Newcastle United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Yoan Gouffran and Matt Ritchie.

It was sweat revenge for the Magpies, who had been beaten by the same scoreline on Saturday against the same opposition.

Even though many would take a league victory over a cup win, the result was still pleasing and showed good strength in depth.

Achraf Lazaar and DeAndre Yedline made their full debuts at left-back and right-back, while Christian Atsu got more game time under his belt.

Gouffran scored the pick of the bunch after lashing a left footed volley home from inside the box, while Ritchie showed good footwork and composure to slot his shot into the corner of the net.

Speaking before the game, the BBC reported that  United manager Rafa Benitez praised the Frenchman.” I am really pleased for him and he is scoring great goals now. Especially from volleys, so that is good.”

Ritchie may have raised a few eyebrows when he decided to drop down a league to play for Newcastle, but he’s been worth every penny so far.

The former Bournemouth player had a terrific season the last time he played in the Championship, and this goal shows what a good player he can be.

“It was a game in which we changed players,” the Chronicle reported that Benitez continued. “We gave an opportunity to different players and we had to win and go through.

“We did it with two great goals and a clean sheet, so it’s very positive.”

If the Magpies’ wide players can carry on getting goals and providing good service into the box it will bode well for the rest of the season.
