Watch: Bobby Wood breaks goal drought for Hamburg with two in German Cup
USA striker Bobby Wood and Hamburg have been mired in a scoring drought, but that changed early in the club's German Cup second-round match against third-tier Hallescher FC on Tuesday.
Wood scored in the eighth minute and then added a second just before halftime, tallying for the third and fourth times this season but for the first time since Sept. 10.
The first goal came off a classic counterattack, with a clearance off a Hallescher throw-in turning directly into a scoring opportunity for Hamburg. Wood was the beneficiary, though he overcame a bit of a heavy touch to his right by chipping the on-rushing goalkeeper to give Hamburg the 1-0 lead.
The second involved much more individual effort, with Wood fending off a defender 25 yards from goal and then striking from the edge of the box with a right-footed effort.
As a whole, Hamburg, which sits in last in the Bundesliga, has been woeful in the attacking third, scoring just five goals across all competitions dating back to August. Wood makes up for 80% of the tally.
Wood is coming off a season when he scored 17 goals for Union Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga, earning his summer move to the top-flight club.
Wood has scored three times in 2016 for the USA, with his most recent strike coming in a World Cup qualifying win over St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
