Watch Bobby Wood score to get the USMNT level against Mexico
The first half of Friday's World Cup qualifier against Mexico was pretty much a nightmare for the U.S. men's national team. The lore and legend of the "Dos a Cero" streak was killed off pretty quickly on Miguel Layun goal. Then, goalkeeper Tim Howard went out injured, forcing the USMNT to bring in a backup that hadn't played in a game in months.
But Bobby Wood made sure the second half went a bit better for the Americans, courtesy of a crucial equalizer in the 49th minute. It was a pretty good team goal (watch it above) — Michael Bradley forces a turnover and John Brooks gets the ball to Jozy Altidore, who spins the defender and finds some space to work with. He slips a ball to Wood and his pacy strike takes a slight deflection that is enough to get it into the back of the net.
The goal is Wood’s fourth of the year for the USMNT and his eighth on the international level. It is also his second career goal vs. Mexico — he also scored against in overtime of the CONCACAF Cup on Oct. 10, 2015.
Whether the goal will mark a much better second half than the first one remains to be seen. But so far, thanks to Wood, the Americans are back level and pushing for a game-winner.
