Watch Bobby Wood score twice to end Hamburg's ridiculous scoring drought
Hamburg finally broke their six-game scoring drought on Tuesday in the DFB-Pokal’s 2nd Round, and of course it was U.S. international Bobby Wood who provided the goals.
I say “of course” because Bobby Wood had literally been the only Hamburg player to score in the last two months.* Wood has both of Hamburg's goals in 8 Bundesliga games this season, and now he has two of the team’s three goals in the German Cup. (Alan Halilovic scored HSV’s only other goal, in the 1st Round cup win over Zwickau on August 22).
Facing third-division side Hallescher FC, Wood opened the scoring by finishing off a textbook counter attack.
Wood then doubled Hamburg’s lead before the break with a sweet strike in between not one, not two, but THREE Hallescher defenders.
Hamburg might be dead last in the Bundesliga -- two goals in eight games will do that – but Wood has been their lone bright spot so far this season. And that's good news if you’re a U.S. fan, as Wood will likely be called upon again when the USMNT faces off with rivals Mexico in Columbus on November 11 for their first match in the Hex.
*UPDATE: Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Gian-Luca Waldschmidt scored in the second half to cement a 4-0 win, so now Hamburg have three different scorers over the last two months. Which still isn't great.
