Watch Clint Dempsey score a hat trick as the USMNT down Honduras

Clint Dempsey wasn't even supposed to be here tonight.

The U.S. national team veteran suffered a heart complication months ago, and he's made incredible progress to be back on the field already. Not only that, but he likely wouldn't even have started against Honduras if Bobby Wood hadn't gone down injured. Life works in mysterious ways though, and with Dempsey back and needed against Honduras for the U.S.'s crucial qualifier, he stepped up. He didn't just step up though, he shined.

First, he ran onto Christian Pulisic's perfectly chipped through ball and stiff-armed his defender on the way to powering a fantastic flying volley into the upper corner to make it 3-0.

Then, his run and cool finish made it 5-0 for the U.S.

Finally, there was this. The coup de grace.

That gem of a free kick made it three on the night for Dempsey, conveniently netting his hat trick on the night of U.S. Soccer's #Get3 rallying cry.

Dempsey was superb on the night, and his hat trick was well deserved. With the goal, the 34-year-old became the oldest USMNT player to ever score a hat trick, and the oldest player from any country with a hat trick in Hexagonal play.

Not bad for a guy who wasn't even supposed to be on the pitch today.
