Watch Jozy Altidore become the USMNT's No. 3 all-time leading goal scorer

Jozy Altidore is now the third leading goal scorer in United States men's national team history. The striker broke a tie with Eric Wynalda for the spot when he scored a penalty for his 35th international career goal against St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday.

That was hardly a spectacular goal. After all, it was a spot kick against a team that never had a shot, and people will use that to diminish Altidore's 35th goal. People have found ways to diminish almost everything Altidore has done for a decade now.

Altidore's first touch isn't any good, his finishing is sloppy, he doesn't work hard enough, he's always injured and pretty much everything else has been lobbed at him. And some of it may be true. But he is the third leading scorer in the history of the national team and not by accident.

Whether he was a teenager scoring against Mexico, finding the back of the net in the Gold Cup or even helping put the Americans in a World Cup, all he's done is score goals for the national team. His place in the history books as the third in all-time scoring isn't at all undeserved. He's been a good goal-scorer for the U.S. and while you can pick at his faults, you can't argue the number of times he's gotten on the scoresheet for the Americans. And at just 26 years old, Altidore is going to score plenty more.
