Watch U.S. striker Bobby Wood score in his Bundesliga debut

Updated Jul. 28, 2023 1:16 p.m. ET

Welcome to the Bundesliga, Bobby Wood! The American striker opened his account early in his debut for his new club Hamburg, slotting home with an impressive strike from just inside the edge of the box in a 1-1 draw against Ingolstadt.

Keeper assist! Hamburg goalie Rene Adler opted to take Route 1 with his goal kick, finding the American down the pitch. Wood showed solid strength to fend off Marvin Matip, then drove a low screamer past Orjan Nyland to give Hamburg the first-half lead.

The goal continued Wood's penchant for coming up with the goods in key matches. Hamburg's summer signing scored 17 goals in his debut season with Union Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga last year, a record for an American in Germany's top two flights. He also tallied game-winning goals in back-to-back friendlies against the Netherlands and Germany last summer.

Still just 23 years old, Wood has firmly inserted himself into the United States' national team picture. With Clint Dempsey now dealing with a medical issue, Wood could be called upon to shoulder the load for a while. USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann and U.S. Soccer are expected to reveal the roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

Smart money says that Wood will see his name on the call sheet.
