Wayne Rooney rips 'disgraceful' media for disrespectful treatment
It's been a tough year for Wayne Rooney. He's seen his role in both Manchester United and England diminished. The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League. And now, he's finding himself on the wrong side of media coverage. Well, that was the final straw and enough is enough for the 31-year-old striker.
After pictures emerged of him apparently drunkenly partying during last week's international break, Rooney issued an apology for his actions. It seemed the issue was put to bed, but Rooney addressed it again after Saturday's 1-1 draw against Arsenal.
"It feels as if the media are trying to write my obituary and I won't let that happen," he told reporters via Goal.com. "What's been going on is disgraceful. I'm proud to play for my country and I'm proud of my achievements. I've not finished yet.
"I think what's been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough. That's all I want to say."
Since the incident, a number of former players and managers have come to Rooney's defense. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp put it bluntly: "All the legends we love and admire, they drank like devils and smoked like crazy."
Maybe the timing of the photos was poor for Rooney, but the actions are pretty benign in the long run. He wasn't hurting anybody or affecting his team. He wasn't available to play for England in their friendly vs. Spain, anyway, because of a knock.
Then again, this is the English media we're talking about and arguably the greatest English player of his generation. It'll be a cold day in hell before the UK tabs pass on any story about Roo.
