West Brom: Nacer Chadli already repaying his transfer fee

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

West Brom signed Nacer Chadli from Tottenham in the summer and the Belgian is already making a huge impact on the Baggies’ fortunes.

We thought West Brom would have a better start in the Premier League, considering they kept most of the club’s players for this year. But reality was different as the Baggies secured just one win, one draw and a loss in their first three games. The team needed to do something, and then finally, they did a deal to sign Nacer Chadli.

The transfer market in the summer is a huge opportunity for teams to adjust their roster. The Premier League was the European league whom spent the most money in deals for players (over €1 billion) this year.

West Brom was involved with some movements on the roster, including Chadli. But definitely, the most expectations of the new players at the Albion was on Chadli. The Belgian winger came to The Hawthorns from Tottenham Hotspur in a €13 million deal.

Many people were surprised that Spurs allowed such a talented player to leave the club. Even his former manager, Tim Sherwood, was surprised he was allowed to leave White Hart Lane. But Chadli is under the guidance of Tony Pulis now.

The improvement in the team has already began with him. Last Sunday, Chadli had a dream home debut: two goals, two assists, in a 4-2 win for West Brom against West Ham. Could this now be a new era for the team?

Maybe it is too soon to predict the future, but last Sunday looked a good sign. Observers lauded Chadli’s performance. The reviews talked about the brilliant skills of the Belgian. But there are two important things Chadli can add to West Brom: versatility and connection in the field. He demonstrated it.

It didn’t look like only the first home game for Chadli with the team. He seemed comfortable driving or passing the ball, and shooting, too. Chadli also had the chance to show his powerful shooting with his penalty kick, and he never seemed absent when teamwork was required.

The number 22 played behind the forward, Jose Salomon Rondon. A perfect place in the team for his game type. Thinking about the future, when they play together, opposition defenses should now fear this combination of two wonderful players.

Baggies fans could be getting used to celebrating more goals and wins if things keep working this way for the team. West Brom seems to fit Chadli, like water to fish after last weekend. Now, finally, we can sit and watch a team which is made for a good performance this season.
