West Ham Match Preview: West Brom Away

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

After a horrendous capitulation last weekend, West Ham make the difficult away trip to face Tony Pulis’ West Brom. After fooling everyone into thinking we had turned a corner in the opening half an hour against Watford, Bilic must have had some serious words with the players. But will they have had a lasting effect on the players?

Our Opponents

West Brom are in limbo off the pitch, with a takeover of the club being completed on Thursday and question marks around Pulis’ future. The fans might be happy with some changes to the club, as the Baggies have been stagnating in lower mid table since he took over, however getting rid of Pulis is a dangerous gamble.

Both sides of the argument around Pulis have been proven with their performances on the pitch. On the one hand, they have kept two clean sheets in four matches and look very solid at the back, but on the other hand they have managed just two goals in the same period.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

They do have some dangerous players that could cause the Hammers some issues. Salomon Rondon started the season strongly and can dominate a defence on his day, although it depends on the service he receives. Even more dangerous is their organisation and prowess at set pieces, and with the poor defensive display we saw last week, this is something West Ham will have to watch out for.

It really was not a pretty sight last week as we went from 2-0 up and cruising to 4-2 down and praying for the final whistle. The defence just seemed to fall to pieces, and they were not helped by the lack of effort from our midfield. We have to hope that Bilic learnt some lessons from the humiliation and we will not see anything like this again.

There were some positives to take away though. Dimitri Payet is back and he reminded everyone just how much we missed him as he put in a dazzling display, including that amazing rabona assist. Michail Antonio is also looking sharp and continued his excellent scoring streak with two more headed goals, although he may find it more difficult to find time and space in the area against the disciplined West Brom defence.

    West Brom 1-1 West Ham

West Brom will be a difficult opponent in many ways. With our defence performing the way it is at the moment we can’t be trusted to keep a clean sheet, but our attack should rescue us a point.
