West Ham should snub Chelsea star

Cesc Fabregas wouldn’t help West Ham

West Ham are suffering from a multitude of maladies at the moment, and they certainly need to sign some additional help in January. Unfortunately for the Hammers, signing Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas wouldn’t solve any of their issues.

Reports from England claim that Slaven Bilic’s club are monitoring Fabregas’ situation at Stamford Bridge. The Spanish international has been on the outside of Antonio Conte’s starting XI for most of the season. He did get the start yesterday against Arsenal, but was hauled off early in the second half due to his poor play.

Fabregas could still help quite a few Premier League clubs, but he’s a poor fit with West Ham. The Hammers’ chief challenge at the moment is that they are leaking goals. They do need an improvement in their defensive midfield, but Fabregas isn’t the answer. There’s a reason Conte doesn’t rate him.

At this point in his career, he’s a very weak presence on the defensive end of the pitch. He might be a marginal upgrade over Mark Noble, but he won’t move the needle for Bilic. They need to set their sights quite a bit higher if they really want to move up the Premier League table.

It’s not as if Fabregas would be an inexpensive acquisition either. Chelsea might be willing to part with him for a pretty modest transfer fee, but he would immediately become one of the highest earners at West Ham. Just imagine how Dimitri Payet might react after learning that he suddenly became his club’s second highest earner.

From Fabregas’ perspective, he needs to do anything he can to secure a move away from Chelsea. It’s clear that Conte isn’t a manager who is likely to value his contributions to the team. He can’t afford to be choosy in regards to his next club. From that standpoint, West Ham could be an attractive destination for the skillful midfielder.

Even so, West Ham need to find players in their prime to help rescue them from their current doldrums. Spending big on a midfielder who’s game is in steep decline would not be a prudent decision.
