Whitecaps ready for visit to Atlanta

Published Mar. 16, 2018 10:00 a.m. ET

The Vancouver Whitecaps have a habit of doing big things on the road.

In fact, since 2015 no MLS team has won more games away from home (18) than Vancouver, according to the team's website.

Winning in Atlanta on Saturday at raucous Mercedes-Benz Stadium, though, won't be easy.

In its short existence, Atlanta has thrived at home and improved to 6-1-2 all-time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a 3-1 win over DC United last week.

More than 72,000 tickets were sold to the home opener against DC United, an MLS record.

Josef Martinez, Miguel Almiron and Hector Villalba each scored for Atlanta, helping the Five Stripes bounce back from an ugly 4-0 opening loss at Houston with a convincing win over DC United.

The Whitecaps are coming off a 2-1 win at Houston.

Kei Kamara and Brek Shea each tallied for Vancouver against the Dynamo, which arrives in Atlanta with two wins in two games.

Kamara, one of 10 additions in an offseason that featured significant roster turnover, has scored in each of his first two games to reach 100 career goals. Kamara is ninth on MLS? all-time scoring list.

"It's still early in the season," Vancouver coach Carl Robinson said. "We're not going to gel straight away. Players are still getting used to playing with each other. It'll take a little bit of time. What's important here is that they buy-in to how we do things here. We train properly, we train hard. If you train properly, you play properly, and that's certainly what's got us off to a good start in preseason and the first two games of the season."

Atlanta is still waiting to utilize its biggest offseason addition.

United signed midfielder Ezequiel Barco to a record $15 million contract.

Barco suffered a quad injury in training leading up to the opener against Houston. Barco will miss his third straight game on Saturday. United are hoping he could return in two weeks against Minnesota.

"It's up to him, his recovery process and going through the rehab process," Atlanta coach Tata Martino told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Vancouver won last season's meeting with Atlanta 3-1, behind two goals from Kendall Waston, one of the few holdovers from last season for the Whitecaps.
