Who makes the Newcastle and Norwich combined XI?
Newcastle United play Norwich City on Wednesday at St. James’ Park in the Championship.
The Magpies will want to get back to winning ways after losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers and only drawing against Aston Villa.
Alex Neil’s side are currently top of the table with 20 points, just one point above Huddersfield Town.
United are sitting down in fifth following their slight slump in form – but are still only four points away from the top.
Both teams have got plenty of good players, so this fixture should certainly be one to watch! The formation depicted in the selections is 4-2-3-1, as is the habit these days.
So check through the slides below to see who makes the Newcastle Toons combined XI between the Tyneside club and Norwich.
Matz Sels
Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels may not have been the most spectacular performer this season, but he’s held his own.
He is up against Northern Ireland international Michael McGovern, another solid if unspectacular goalkeeper.
Sels pips his opposite man to the post because of his quality, which has been fleeting at times but is definitely there.
Martin Olsson and DeAndre Yedlin
Norwich City left-back Martin Olsson makes this team ahead of Paul Dummett or Achraf Lazaar from Newcastle United – while DeAndre Yedlin from the Magpies gets the nod.
Yedlin can be so dangerous coming forward, while his pace will cause problems for everyone down the right flank.
Olsson has started five games so far this season, scoring one goal and is definitely a better bet than Dummett.
Jamaal Lascelles (c) and Timm Klose
When a team is top of the table it’s difficult to ignore their players and while Ciaran Clark or Chancel Mbemba could have deserved to start Timm Klose gets the nod.
While Jamaal Lascelles is almost an undroppable player and is handed the captain’s armband for this side.
Klose has an WhoScored.com rating of 7.13 for the season so far with 6.3 interceptions and 3.6 interceptions per game.
Jonny Howson and Jonjo Shelvey
Both of these midfield picks have been very important players for Newcastle United and Norwich City this season.
Jonny Howson has hit three goals and created three assists, while Jonjo Shelvey has also scored a trio and created one other.
With the goals, drive and passing range of this duo in the middle of the park this imaginary outfit would be hard to beat indeed.
Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie
Norwich City have unearthed a gem of a young winger again and just as they sold Nathan Redmon they have found a new replacement.
Jacob Murphy has scored four goals already this campaign and has split his time between the left and right flanks.
While Matt Ritchie is an excellent player and is well experienced in the Championship – he is an automatic choice.
Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic
Call this selection biased – but hell, its a Newcastle website. Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic are an excellent duo and can prove that.
The holding up ability of Mitrovic and the dribbling skill of Perez can cause problems for any defences – as they have proven before.
Cameron Jerome and Steven Naismith are unlucky to miss out, but sometimes that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
