World Cup qualifier between Pakistan and Yemen postponed after deadly attacks

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:41 p.m. ET

ZURICH -- FIFA has postponed Pakistan's World Cup qualifier against Yemen that was scheduled for Tuesday in Lahore because of ''safety and security reasons.''

On Sunday, 15 people were killed when suicide bombers targeted two churches in a Christian neighborhood of the eastern Pakistan city.

The Pakistani Taliban said it carried out the attacks which provoked reprisals.

A Christian mob burned two people to death who were suspected of being involved.

FIFA says it will announce a new date and neutral venue later for the second-leg match in the first round of Asian qualifying.

Yemen won the first leg 3-1 last Thursday when global qualifying kicked off for the 2018 tournament in Russia.

That game was played in Doha, Qatar, as FIFA has also judged Yemen unsafe to host matches.
