World Cup Qualifying: Previewing Manchester City's weekend action

A look at which Manchester City players and their nations will be in action for World Cup Qualifying during this international break.

Overall it was a great August for Manchester City. A flying start in the Premier League with three wins out of three. Easily through the UEFA Champions Leauge qualifying round and into the group stage. And an active transfer market seeing a lot of players come and go. (Check out out review of the Manchester City Arrivals).

Now as the EPL pauses, the world focuses on World Cup 2018 Qualification. Here is a quick look at which Manchester City players and their respective nations will be in action over the next few days.

UEFA

On Sunday UEFA Group Stage qualification begins. First a look at which nations related to City players are in action.

– England (Raheem Sterling, John Stones, & Joe Hart[loan]) vs. Slovakia

– Norway vs. Germany (Ilkay Gundogan & Leroy Sane)

Just two matches through the close of the weekend that could include Man City players in UEFA qualifying. Fans will get there first look at post-City Joe Hart. Meanwhile, will Germany give Gundogan or Sane minutes having not yet played for City?

CONMEBOL

Four of the five matches in today’s South American qualification involves nations of Manchester City players.

– Columbia (Marlos Moreno) vs. Venezuela

– Ecuador vs. Brazil (Fernando & Fernandinho)

– Argentina (Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero*, Willy Caballero, & Nicolas Otamendi) vs. Uruguay

– Paraguay vs. Chile (Claudio Bravo)

After six group stage matches played Uruguay and Ecuador sit atop the table with 13 points. Brazil will be hoping for a strong showing after their Olympic Gold as they currently sit in 6th place, out side of qualification.

Remaining Federations

While CONCACAF and the AFC are also in Qualifying, Manchester City does not have any first team players involved in these regions. Meanwhile, the Ivory Coast and Nigeria are involved in the African Cup of Nations rather than World Cup Qualifying at the moment.
