Zenit demand British record fee for reported Spurs target
Russian side Zenit St Petersburg are demanding a British transfer record fee of around £72million for reported Tottenham target Axel Witsel.
Belgian midfielder Witsel has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane all summer, with the Daily Telegraph reporting that the club remain interested in a late move ahead of Tuesday's deadline.
The 26-year-old was also tentatively linked with Chelsea in June, but Zenit are demanding a near-world record fee of around £72.8million for their dominant central midfielder - a fee which would eclipse the current British record of £59.7million paid out by Manchester United for Angel Di Maria in 2014.
"The Belgian is still a Zenit player, the amount for his release clause is €100 million," said a statement from TASS, Zenit's press service.
