Report: Officer who tackled former tennis pro James Blake strikes deal
A New York City police officer that tackled former tennis player James Blake outside a New York City hotel in 2015 reached a disciplinary agreement with the Civilian Complaint Review Board and avoided a trial in the case, reportsThe New York Times.
The Civilian Complaint Review Board investigates and prosecutes accusations of police misconduct and James Frascatore, the officer who tackled Blake, and his attorney were expected to announce the case's resolution.
Frascatore faced possible dismissal from the police force, but it is not known what the outcome from the case is.
Blake was outside of the Grand Hyatt New York in midtown Manhattan on Sept. 9, 2015, when Frascatore approached Blake and threw him to the ground. Blake was then handcuffed by Frascatore, who was wearing street clothes.
Authorities later said that Blake was misidentified as one of the suspects in a credit card fraud ring. The suspects were using the hotel as a delivery system for their fraud ring.
Three people were eventually caught and pleaded guilty to grand larceny for their roles in the ring. Each were sentenced to six months in jail, according to the Times.
Blake's incident highlighted the growing tension between the police and citizens of New York, and it brought race-related issues in the city to the forefront. Both New York's mayor and former Police Commissioner apologized to Blake for their department's actions in the case.
