Svetlana Kuznetsova gave herself a major haircut in the middle of a big match

Tennis is the most lonesome of all sports. In team sports, you can turn to any number of a dozen teammates or personnel when something goes wrong. Go to a golf tournament and you have a caddy, officials, spectators you can interact with and, above all, lots of free time. On a tennis court though - where the spotlight is on the two players on the court and no one else? The sport where  changeovers last half as long as an NFL's commercial break? You have nowhere to hide and no one to help. So when your hair, braided into a ponytail before the match, starts bothering you, there's no one to ask for help. You can't stop and re-braid it yourself, there's not enough time. So, you gotta do what you gotta do and, in this case, it meant Svetlana Kuznetsova breaking out the scissors and cutting off a huge chunk of hair during her opening match at the year-end, eight-woman WTA Finals.

The two-time Grand Slam champion had just been broken to go down 1-2 when she became aggrieved with her follicles. After her quick snip (I've seen bald man get longer haircuts) she went back on the court and broke Agnieszka Radwanska right back. Kuznetsova, who qualified for the invitational tournament in the very last possible match of the season, went on to save a match point and score the three-set upset.

What can happen when hair care and tennis don't mix? Caroline Wozniacki could have demonstrated, if she was anywhere near making the WTA Finals.

I'm most impressed with the fact her tennis bag contained scissors big enough to complete a hair cut. Then again, tennis bags are like your grandmother's purse - you can find just about anything in there if you look hard enough.
