Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum headlines UFC 188 in Mexico

Published Feb. 23, 2015 12:28 p.m. ET

The UFC heavyweight title will finally be decided on June 13 when current champion Cain Velasquez returns to action to face interim champion Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC 188 from Mexico City, Mexico.

UFC officials confirmed the fight announcement on Monday.

Velasquez (13-1) will come back to the Octagon for the first time in nearly two years after suffering a barrage of injuries that kept him out of action.  Velasquez was originally scheduled to face Werdum in November 2014, but a nagging knee injury forced him to the sidelines and out of the event.

Now it appears Velasquez is ready to defend his title once again as he fights in Mexico for the first time since joining the UFC.

Werdum (19-5-1) remained on the UFC card from Mexico last November where he defeated Mark Hunt by second-round TKO to claim the interim heavyweight title in Velasquez's absence.

The former PRIDE and Strikeforce fighter has won his last five fights in a row as he made a steady climb up the divisional rankings before winning the interim title last year.

Further details about additional bouts and ticket sales are still to be announced.
