Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz face sanctions from NSAC for role in UFC 202 press-conference melee
Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor will face sanctions from the NSAC for their role in the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference melee last month
The Nevada Athletic Commission will indeed hand down punishment to Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz for their roles in the melee that occurred at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference last month. It should be noted, according to ESPN, the Nevada Attorney General’s office has filed individual complaints against both McGregor and Diaz.
Commission executive director Bob Bennett would later reveal the severity of the situation during an interview with MMAFighting.
“Totally unacceptable,” revealed Bennett. “Not indicative of the way professional fighters should conduct themselves…It showed disrespect for press, fighters, UFC and the commission.”
The incident occurred shortly after Diaz walked out of the press conference, which was held at the David Copperfield theater in the MGM Grand, after McGregor showed up 30 minutes late. Tempers began to flare as both men continued their verbal assault on one another before a water bottle was tossed in the direction of McGregor’s team.
From that point on, both teams continued to launch water bottles and coffee cups at each other as fans around them went wild. McGregor would even jump into the fray as he hurled two full cans of Monster Energy towards Diaz.
UFC President Dana White later revealed the brawl resulted in a lawsuit after a fan was struck by one of the thrown objects.
The next NSAC hearing is currently scheduled for Sept. 29. There is no word yet whether Diaz and McGregor would be part of the meeting’s agenda.
In terms of competition, both men eventually settle their difference in the main event of UFC 202, where fans saw McGregor (20-3) earn a bloody majority decision over Diaz (19-11) in front of sold out T-Mobile Arena.
Diaz previously defeated McGregor in their initial fight at UFC 196 in March. There is currently no word who either men will face in their next bouts.
