'Cowboy' wins seventh straight with decision over Henderson

Published Jan. 18, 2015 11:45 p.m. ET

Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (27-6) extended his win streak to seven straight and finally got a win over rival and former champion Benson Henderson (21-5) Sunday in Boston at UFC Fight Night. After three rounds of fighting, all three judges scored the bout for Cerrone by scores of 29-28.

This third fight between friends was fought close and hard in spurts. Henderson managed to keep Cerrone off-balance a lot with his awkward but effective kicks, most of them to Cerrone's lead leg.

For his part, Cerrone's best moments were in scoring two takedowns, scoring some riding time on the ground, and countering with his own big kicks late in the third round. At the end of the fight, the pair hugged and then each raised their own hands in victory.

In the end, the crowd favorite got the nod from the judges.

The fight was Cerrone's second in the last two weeks. After the fight, he wouldn't admit just how banged up he was leading into and during this fight.

"That's my secret only," he said.

A saddened Henderson has now lost two straight, and though he felt he deserved the decision, he said he would simply move on and be ready to fight again soon. "We've got to man up and move on," he said.

"Sign me up for next weekend! Let's go!"
