Matt Brown: I've learned more from GSP than almost any other fighter
On the latest edition of the Great MMA Debate podcast, the crew discusses when it's the right time for a fighter to come back or call it quits plus updates on the Reebok deal with the UFC and TapouT going to the WWE.
UFC welterweight Matt Brown weighs in on the subject of Georges St-Pierre and the recent comments from UFC president Dana White in which he stated he believes the former welterweight champion probably isn't coming back to fight again.
Brown has long stated that he wanted to face St-Pierre, but with the news that the Canadian legend might be done for good, Brown says that beyond anything to do with competition, he held the long-reigning king at 170 pounds in extremely high regard.
"I've always wanted to fight him. I always thought I would have been a good matchup for him, although I may not have showed it recently, but honestly I've looked up to GSP a s--t ton. I've learned more from him than just about any other fighter," Brown says.
Brown says it wasn't as much about St-Pierre's style in the cage as his mental makeup that turned him into an admirer.
St-Pierre only lost twice while in the UFC, and each time he was able to battle his way back, avenge the defeats and left the sport on top of the world.
"Probably more than anything, the way he turned his career around. He came in the UFC and came up pretty fast, but then he lost to (Matt) Hughes, came back and beat Hughes. Lost to (Matt) Serra, came back and beat Serra. The way he's able to evolve and able to find a way to win, it's very respectable," Brown says. "He just found a way."
Hear this and much, much more from Brown, Columbus radio host Jeremy Loper and Damon Martin, including new information about the Reebok deal that may change the way fighters look at the new system coming in July as well as the latest news from around the MMA world.
