Sergio Pettis forced out of UFC Fight Night Portland due to injury
Flyweight Sergio Pettis will not be fighting Louis Smolka as scheduled next weekend at UFC Fight Night in Portland, Oregon due to an injury.
UFC Fight Night 96 is set to take place in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, October 1. The main card, unfortunately, took a hit today when UFC No. 15-ranked flyweight Sergio Pettis was forced to back out of his fight with No. 9-ranked Louis Smolka. The news came out today via the Instagram account of Pettis’ coach Duke Roufus. He explained in the post that Pettis had suffered a “minor injury” and would be unable to fight.
Pettis (14-2) is coming off of a win at UFC 197, where he defeated Chris Kelades via unanimous decision. Pettis is currently on a two-fight win streak and has won four of his last five. Having the chance to fight an opponent in the top 10 of the division was a huge opportunity for Pettis, one that he could have taken advantage of. The extent of the injury is unknown, but as expressed by his coach it is “Only a speedbump.”
Smolka (11-1) is currently on a four-fight win streak. Included in those four wins is two performance of the night bonuses. The Hawaiian native is 5-1 since joining the UFC back in January of 2014. He holds wins over some of the best in the division including Neil Seery and Paddy Holohan.
There is no word yet as to whether or not the UFC will try to replace Pettis on such short notice.
