UFC 206 Results: Lando Vannata Finishes John Makdessi with Wheel Kick

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Lando Vannata sends a message to the lightweight division and takes his shot at Knockout of the Year with a spinning wheel kick knockout over John Makdessi.

John Makdessi has been very up and down in his UFC career. Makdessi is a very strong and gritty fighter with a ridiculous chin. Unfortunately for John, he is 2-3 in his last 5 fights, one of those loses coming on short notice to Donald Cerrone. Makdessi however did win his last fight, picking up a split decision over Mehdi Baghdad. If Makdessi want any chance of ever breaking into those lightweight rankings he will need to pick up a win over a hyped Lando Vannata.

Lando Vannata has the lightweight division on notice after an impressive showing against top 3 lightweight Tony Ferguson. Vannata made his UFC debut against Ferguson on short-notice and proceeded to take it to him. Vannata had Ferguson rocked and near finished but Ferguson was able to rally and submit Vannata in the second. Lando Vannata will look to prove his performance was not a fluke and officially send the hype train out from the station with a victory over John Makdessi.

The first round started out with Vannata’s usual quick and awkward style. Makdessi did his best to answer back with strong jabs. Vannata continued to push the pace for the next few minutes.

Just a minute and half into the fight, Vannata threw a spinning wheel kick to the face of John Makdessi and turned out the lights. An unbelievable finish by lightweights newest prospect. It takes a lot to crack Makdessi’s jaw, and Makdessi has eaten spinning wheel kicks before, but that one was right on the money and it was good night for John.

Lando Vannata just sent a massive message to the lightweight division. Almost stopping top contender Tony Ferguson and now submitting his claim for the KO of the year over John Makdessi has already sent his popularity through the roof. Now Vannata is just another breed of fresh talent in what is already a stacked lightweight division. Everyone is certainly excited for his future in the UFC.
