Yoel Romero still wants 'Jacare' Souza next, targets summer return

UFC middleweight Yoel Romero has elected not to have surgery on his injured knee that would put the former Olympic silver medalist out of action for an extended period of time.

According to Romero's manager Andy Mendez via UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani, Romero tore his right meniscus, which forced him to withdraw from his last fight against Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza at FOX UFC Fight Night in New Jersey this past weekend.

Surgery was an option for the Cuban born fighter, but he decided against it so he could return to action sooner rather than later.

His manager said that with rest and recovery on the knee, Romero is hoping to return to the Octagon as early as either June or July.

As far as matchups go, Romero isn't a fan of calling out other fighters, but because he had to pull out of his last bout he hopes the UFC will consider rebooking him for a fight against Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza this summer.

The two middleweights have twice been matched up in the past few months with the fight falling apart on both occasions. Souza fell ill just before their last fight scheduled for UFC 184 and then Romero suffered his knee injury prior to this one.

The UFC hasn't made any decision yet on what comes next for Romero or 'Jacare' but the option is open for the fight to happen in the next few months.
