Michigan State women oust Michigan in Big Ten quarterfinal (Mar 3, 2017)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Victoria Gaines scored 18 points and sixth-seeded Michigan State eliminated No. 3 seed Michigan 74-64 on Friday night to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

On Saturday, the Spartans (21-10) will play No. 4-ranked and second-seeded Maryland, a 92-80 winner over Minnesota.

Mardrekia Cook snapped a tie with the first basket of the second quarter and the Spartans led the rest of the way. They were up by 16 early in the second half before an 8-0 run got the Wolverines within nine with a minute left but no closer.

Tori Jankoska added 14 points and five assists and Branndais Agee and Jenna Allen 12 points each while Taya Reimer grabbed nine rebounds for the Spartans.

Kysre Gondrezick scored 23 points to lead the Wolverines (22-9), who had a double-bye into the quarterfinals. Katelynn Flaherty added 18 points, Hallie Thome 16 points and nine rebounds and Jillian Dunston 12 rebounds.

Michigan State beat its in-state rival in their other meeting this season, 86-68, on Feb. 19.
