Oregon beats No. 22 North Carolina women 79-77

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Lexi Bando scored 18 points, Jillian Alleyne had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Oregon upset No. 22 North Carolina 79-77 on Sunday, marking the first time the Tar Heels ever opened the season with two straight losses.

After Oregon's Alleyne, who scored her 70th double-double, made the second of two free throws with 25 seconds left, the Tar Heels had two chances to win. Jamie Cherry's 3-pointer went off the front of the rim but deflected out of bounds of Alleyne. Cherry then had a 3 bounce off the backboard and rim as time expired.

Cherry led North Carolina, which opened the season Friday with a one-point home loss to Gardner-Webb, with 23 points.

Oregon (1-0) led by 10 on Kat Cooper's 3 with 6:45 to play but with Cherry scoring 5 points North Carolina reeled off 9 straight points. Bando hit a 3 for the Ducks with three minutes left.

N'Dea Bryant scored of UNC at 2:05, Alleyne made two of four free throws to push the lead back to 4. Cherry made it a 1-point game with 26 seconds left.

Hilary Summers, Stephanie Watts and Destinee Walker had 14 points each North Carolina.
