Undertaker vs. Goldberg: Which Undefeated Streak is Better?
With Goldberg’s return to WWE, we look back to see which streak was more dominant, his 173-0 streak in WCW or The Undertaker’s 21-0 streak at WrestleMania.
On the October 17 episode of RAW, Goldberg made his highly anticipated WWE return. After being gone for 12 years, he came out and issued a challenge between himself and Brock Lesnar. The two met once before back at WrestleMania XX. Whether the match, this time around will answer the hype surrounding it, remains in question. However, with Goldberg now back, people have begun to debate whether his streak of 173 wins in a row in WCW is better than The Undertaker’s 21-0 streak at WrestleMania.
Goldberg had quite the streak in WCW that spanned from 1997 to the end of 1998. Goldberg’s streak came to an end at Starrcade when he lost to Kevin Nash (Thanks to Scott Hall and a taser gun).
During this time, Goldberg was able to win both the United States and the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. His run was a must watch in the late 90’s and it helped him become one of the biggest stars not just in WCW, but in all of wrestling.
Even though the former WCW World Champion accomplished 173 straight wins his streak was a bit flawed. Despite such an impressive mark, he did most of his dominance against the jobbers and undercard in WCW. Goldberg got a chunk of his wins against guys like Disco Inferno, Glacier, Hugh Morris and Brian Addams.
The Undertaker’s streak at WrestleMania spanned two decades facing some of the top talents in wrestling. With the exception of WrestleMania X and 2000, The Deadman has competed at every Show of Shows since 1991.
The Phenom laid dominance at the big dance, claiming 21 victories. The streak sadly ended at WrestleMania XXX when he was finally conquered by The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar.
WrestleMania and The Deadman went hand and hand together with fans excited to see who he would lay to rest at the show. He conquered some of the top wrestlers in the world, from current to future Hall of Famers.
In fact, Undertaker has defeated seven Hall of Famers at the big dance (Jimmy Snuka, Jake Roberts, Diesel, Big Bossman, Ric Flair, Edge and Shawn Michaels). If you take out Giant Gonzalez, Mark Henry, Psycho Sid, and A-Train, his remaining opponents are Hall of Famer’s down the line (Triple H, King Kong Bundy, Shane McMahon, CM Punk, Kane, Big Show, Randy Orton and Batista).
The question now arises who truly had the better streak: Goldberg or The Undertaker? The short answer is The Undertaker.
The first is the length of his streak. Goldberg’s streak was only for a two-year period. While he went undefeated for such a long time, Taker went unbeat at WrestleMania for two decades. The stage was grander during his time of dominance as well. Also, as the times changed, Taker was still able to win at the Big Dance from The New Generation to The Attitude Era and The New Era.
While an abundance of Goldberg’s wins was on Nitro, Taker won his matches at the biggest event of the year. The equivalence of him winning at 21 Wrestlemania’s would be like a NFL team winning 21 Straight SuperBowl’s.
Another reason why The Deadman has the more dominant streak is because of the level of talent he beat. As noted, a big chunk of Goldberg’s wins came from undercard talent and jobbers. The Phenom, on the other hand, defeated numerous current and future Hall of Famers.
Even though Undertaker’s streak was the better of the two, Goldberg still had a fantastic run that made him an icon. The one thing these two have in common is that their streaks were legendary and their legacy will help propel these men into the Hall of Fame.
