WWE Royal Rumble 2017: Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns Set
Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns will have a rematch at WWE Royal Rumble for the WWE Universal Championship.
The WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view will take place on Sunday, January 29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. Besides the Royal Rumble match, the other bouts on the card had not been announced. This would change on Monday’s episode of Raw, though.
At WWE Roadblock, Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns would end via disqualification after Chris Jericho hit a Codebreaker on Owens. This turned out to be Jericho’s plan all along to help KO retain his belt in the most unique way possible. Reigns and Seth Rollins then beat down the heels to close the show.
Well, on Raw, General Manager Mick Foley came out during the opening segment and had some news for Owens and Jericho. He told them that Reigns would be going for the Universal Championship at Royal Rumble, but Y2J will be hanging above the ring in a shark cage. This is so he can’t interfere since this has been the case in every title defense of Owens’.
Owens vs. Reigns won’t main event like it did at Roadblock, though, since the annual Royal Rumble match will main event the show. This likely means that Owens won’t be in it, but most notably, this may be the first Rumble bout that the Big Dog has not been in since 2013. It’s significant because in each of the past three over-the-top rope matches, he has been a focus or the focus of the action.
In 2014, Reigns would be last eliminated by Batista after having a back and forth brawl. 2015 would see the former Shield man win in one of the most negatively received Royal Rumble matches ever. Then, in 2016, he defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in this match, which led to Triple H last eliminating Dean Ambrose to win. Reigns won the belt back in the main event of WrestleMania 32.
So, we are headed toward this sub-main event at Royal Rumble. Intrigued by it?
