Still in mix for PG job Loyer continues to compete for a starting point guard job that is "not yet set" according to head coach Tom Izzo, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports. Impact Loyer started one game in the 2019-20 season when Cassius Winston was forced to sit due to injury, putting up a solid effort with 16 points and six assists against Western Michigan. That doesn't mean he'll necessarily be the first choice to fill the massive void left by Winston's departure, but he does have some experience with the job. He's also "playing better," according to Izzo. Loyer's main competition for the gig appears to be Rocket Watts, though Izzo acknowledged Watts would indeed be playing out of position if that's the direction the team ends up going. He also mentioned A.J. Hoggard, but the freshman will likely be a bit behind out of the gates as he recovers from early-November meniscus surgery.
