Voted Mountain West Preseason POY Ike was selected for Preseason Player of the Player for the Mountain West on Wednesday, Jeff Goodman of Stadium reports.

Impact Ike is going into his junior year coming off a breakout sophomore campaign in which he averaged 19.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.7 steals in 31.6 minutes across 33 games. The 6-foot-9 big man managed to shoot 51.0 percent from the field and earn 6.7 free throw attempts per game. Ike should be a double-double machine again this year for Wyoming.

Impact After an 11 point, six turnover performance in a narrow win over UNLV, Ike responded with a thoroughly improved outing. Previously a bubble team, it's unclear what the postseason holds for Wyoming. Regardless, the sophomore wraps up his season averaging 19.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the field.

Impact Ike didn't take the court in Wednesday's win over San Jose State, but the rest appears to have done him well. He set a new season-best rebounding total while nearly recording his second 30-point effort, all while playing much of the closing stretch in foul trouble. Ike is having a breakthrough season that could make him a sleeper for Mountain West Player of the Year, as he's putting up 20.6 points on 55.6 percent shooting to go along with 8.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists. It doesn't look like the recent injury will be much of a road block moving forward. he and the Cowboys will head to Boise on Tuesday, and only one team will emerge unbeaten in MWC play.

Impact Given Ike's 20 points per contest average on the year, his return to the Cowboys frontcourt is a massive boon Saturday. That being said, this should be a contest Wyoming can handle pretty easily, so Ike could be utilized in a limited capacity if the game turns into a blowout and he's not 100 percent. Ike could be of more importance than usual, however, with Xavier DuSell (hamstring) and Kenny Foster (COVID-19 protocols) expected to sit.

The second-year forward has improved tremendously since he 2020-21 campaign and now has three consecutive 20-point games to bring his scoring average up to an even 20.0 ppg, good for No. 20 in the nation. Most importantly, the Cowboys picked up a tough road win to improve to 2-0 in Mountain West play and have a softer matchup against San Jose State on tap Wednesday.
