Empire Classic status in limbo Martin and the Sun Devils have withdrawn from the Empire Classic due to possible COVID-19 concerns with Baylor, Jeff Goodman of WatchStadium.com reports.

Impact It appears that Baylor coach Scott Drew has tested positive for the virus, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, and while all teams will still be tested upon arrival, it seems ASU is already bowing out. Per Doug Haller of The Athletic, the team still plans to fly to Connecticut with hopes of replacing Florida in the Mohegan Sun tournament, though nothing has been officially confirmed just yet. In a conflicting report, Matt Norlander of CBS Sports suggests the team will remain in the Empire Classic and perhaps just face a new opponent for the Nov. 25 opener.

Named preseason AP All-American Martin was selected to the 2020-21 Associated Press Preseason All-American team that was announced Wednesday.

Impact Martin had a case for the NBA and even declared for the draft, but the second-leading scorer in the Pac-12 (19.1 ppg) will ultimately return to lead the Sun Devils for his senior season. This is a team that will challenge opponents with its speed due to tremendous guard depth, but Martin will captain the ship after averaging 4.1 apg a season ago. Coach Bobby Hurley's squad will be tested early this season, as ASU opens up against No. 2-ranked Baylor on Nov. 25.

Impact Arizona State associate head coach Rashon Burno commented that Martin can "physically punish guys" now, adding that "he has some pop to him." Martin did seek feedback this summer from NBA draft scouts but ultimately decided to return to school for his senior year, so perhaps that process influenced his decision to change his body a bit. In any case, Martin is poised to captain the ship for one of the more talented ASU teams Bobby Hurley has coached. Martin will be joined in the backcourt by five-star prospect Josh Christopher, along with Holland Woods, a former All-Big Sky player. Mix in senior and capable scorer Alonzo Verge, and you get a four-pack of guards all capable of taking over a game. Look for Hurley to go small at times, but at the very least, keep all of his guards fresh.

Impact Martin will return as the Sun Devils' star player for the 2020-21 season, once again positioning the team to compete as a strong contender in the Pac-12. As a junior with the team last season, Martin averaged 19.1 points, 4.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds, 2.0 three-pointers and 1.5 steals in 33.8 minutes per game
