Wynston Tabbs - Needs season-ending knee surgeryEast Carolina head coach Joe Dooley announced Monday that Tabbs will soon undergo knee surgery and miss the remainder of the season, Stephen Igoe of 247Sports.com reports.
ImpactAfter averaging 13.3 points per game over his 12 appearances with Boston College as a redshirt sophomore in 2020-21, Tabbs was expected to take on a high-volume scoring role for the Pirates upon transferring to East Carolina over the offseason. Instead, Tabbs will have his first campaign in Greenville wiped out by the knee injury, which he sustained in the preseason. Knee concerns are nothing new for Tabbs, who missed 16 games as a true freshman in 2018-19 before sitting out the 2019-20 season at Boston College due to knee procedure. According to Dooley, Tabbs' upcoming surgery won't be on the same knee, but the setback is troubling for the 6--foot-2 guard's long-term outlook. Tabbs should have up to two more years of eligibility to use beginning in 2022-23, and he could qualify for a seventh year of eligibility in 2024-25 if he petitions the NCAA for a medical redshirt.
